Specialized Doctoral Course at the Training Centre of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences“Recognition, Management and Control of Invasive Alien Plant Species”

Annotation:
The lecture course aims to provide doctoral students with fundamental knowledge related to the recognition, management and control of invasive alien plant species. The course focuses on the biological characteristics, ecological requirements and strategies of invasive plant species, as well as the mechanisms of their introduction and spread. Special attention will be paid to the impacts of invasive species on ecosystems, biodiversity and ecosystem services.
The course will present methods for the identification and recognition of major invasive alien plant species in Bulgaria and Europe, approaches for early detection and monitoring, as well as methodologies for risk assessment of their spread and impacts. Methods for the prevention, management and control of invasive plant species will also be discussed, including the European and national legislative framework regulating the implementation of these methods.
The course is suitable for doctoral students and early-career researchers in the fields of ecology, forestry and biodiversity conservation.
The course will be held from 1 June 2026 to 5 June 2026 at the Institute of Forests – BAS, with a total duration of 30 academic hours. Contacts:
